CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE CogSIMA 2012

IEEE CogSIMA 2012
The 2nd IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Methods in Situation Awareness and Decision Support 2012
6-8 March 2012
Westin New Orleans Canal Place
New Orleans, LA
http://www.cogsima2012.org

CALL FOR PAPERS

The second conference, CogSIMA 2012 continues and expands the research domain on situation management that was established by the first conference CogSIMA 2011 held in Miami, Florida, USA. The aim of this conference is to provide a venue for presenting scientific results of interdisciplinary studies of complex, heterogeneous dynamical systems that include humans, physical systems, computer agents and networks of such systems whose behaviors depend on situation. Examples of such systems include human-controlled and monitored ad hoc communication mobile networks, social networks, physical and cyber security systems, disaster monitoring and recovery systems, epidemic monitoring and control, intelligent transportation systems, financial and investment services, and tactical and operational battlefield command and control systems. Common to these systems is the need to adequately perceive, reflect and act according to the situational changes happening both in the surrounding world and within the systems themselves. The amounts of information that needs to be processed in order to derive decisions overwhelm both the human cognitive capabilities and the computer processing power. Consequently, there is a need to develop new situation awareness and decision support approaches of augmenting the cognitive capabilities of working collaboratively humans and computer agents.

These agents, both humans and machines, are faced with collaborative solving of various problems: (1) selecting which data is relevant to the objectives and actively requesting or searching for additional information, (2) integrating disparate data sources into a coherent information representation and a consistent model of the world, (3) inferring relations among various elements of the model, including prediction of the future states of the world, (4) assessing uncertainties associated with decisions, (5) learning new models and/or model elements, (6) valuating particular current and/or future states of the world according to some metrics, (7) identifying desirable states of the world, selecting actions that could lead to the desirable states. (8) communicating and interacting with other agents, and engaging into the process of collective situation awareness and decision-making.

While this process is complex, it is further complicated by the fact that each of the steps mentioned above depend on the situation. A specific item of information is relevant in one situation but is irrelevant in another. A given model of the world is adequate in one situation, but is not appropriate in another. A given set of logical conditions implies a given relation holds in a given situation, but not in another situation. A given state is desirable in one situation but is harmful in another. A given sequence of actions leads to a given state in one situation, but not in another.

The solution to the above-mentioned problems requires multi-disciplinary research that addresses at least the topics listed below.

CONFERENCE SCOPE

  • Studies of concepts of situation, context, event, goal, intention, action, activity, behavior in the context of hybrid human-computer systems
  • Theories of situational awareness in human-computer systems
  • Situation dependent data integration
  • Modeling of situations – model acquisition, construction, adaptation and learning
  • Models of human-machine collaboration, hybrid cognition
  • Situation perception, comprehension, tracking, prediction and management
  • Collaborative decision support
  • Theories of relevance
  • Methods of planning actions to achieve desired situations
  • Approaches to spatial and temporal reasoning, reasoning about goals, intentions and actions, and collective reasoning by teams of human and/or machine agents
  • Advancement of situational control theory, including situational feedback, goal assessment and optimization, situational games with nature and adversaries, reflective situational control, and collective situational behavior
  • Metrics and evaluation of performance of hybrid human-computer systems
  • Applications, Case Studies, Systems, Platforms and Tools

Bridging Knowledge Gaps

When Enrico Fermi withdrew the control rods from Chicago Pile-1 in December 1942, there was some uncertainty about what would happen next. Just as with the first nuclear reactor, complex system development often goes ahead with incomplete knowledge. Sometimes we cannot afford to wait until we know everything we would like to know. Sometimes we need to build the system to find it out.

The theme of RE'12 is how requirements engineers handle uncertainty; uncertainty about customer priorities, run-time contexts likely to be encountered, how the requirements will change over time, and so on. Computer systems are required to operate in increasingly complex business, human, social and physical environments. Characterizing uncertainty and mitigating its effects are key challenges for modern requirements engineering.

We invite papers that address all facets of RE, from elicitation to validation, from formal to informal, from large to small, and across people-centric, business-centric and system- centric viewpoints.

Topics of Interest include but are not limited to:
  • Requirements elicitation, analysis, documentation, validation and verification
  • Requirements specification languages, methods, processes and tools
  • Requirements management, traceability, viewpoints, prioritization and negotiation
  • Modeling of requirements, goals and domains
  • Formal analysis and verification
  • Prototyping, simulation and animation
  • Evolution of requirements over time, product families and variability
  • Relating requirements to business goals, architecture and testing
  • Social, cultural, global, personal and cognitive factors
  • Domain-specific problems, experiences and solutions
  • Requirements in service-oriented environments
  • Software product management (incl. topics such as requirements valuation, requirements for product lines, release planning, road-mapping, product life-cycle management as it pertains to requirements, and market focus).

February 25-29, 2012, New Orleans, LA, USA
(co-located with HPCA-18)

Welcome

PPoPP is a forum for leading work on all aspects of parallel programming, including foundational and theoretical aspects, techniques, tools, and practical experiences. In the context of the symposium, "parallel programming" encompasses work on concurrent and parallel systems (multicore, multithreaded, heterogeneous, clustered systems, distributed systems, and large scale machines). Given the rise of parallel architectures into the consumer market (desktops, laptops, and mobile devices), PPoPP is particularly interested in work that addresses new parallel workloads, techniques and tools that attempt to improve the productivity of parallel programming, and work towards improved synergy with such emerging architectures.

ILMF 2012 In Denver, CO Launches Call For Paper

The International LiDAR Mapping Forum [ILMF], the premier event for the LIDAR industry attracting professionals from all over the world and supported by ASPRS and MAPPS has announced a Call for Papers for the 2012 event, to be held in Denver, CO from January 23-25, 2012.

The 11th Annual Conference was held in New Orleans earlier this year and welcomed a total of 576 delegates from 33 countries who collectively gave rave reviews and feedback on a successful and prosperous 3 days. The technical conference program heard 34 technical papers presented by leading authorities in their field, supported by a sold out exhibit hall with 59 of the top international organizations being represented.

The ILMF is an essential event for anyone operating in or connected with mapping as it is applicable in many areas: forestry or landscape management; utilities including gas and power lines, roads and railways, and even along national coastlines and estuaries. The latest sector which is driving a major new sector is mobile mapping, where LIDAR data on urban objects such as buildings, roads features is being collected in significant quantities to form part of map applications on mobile smartphones and other devices.

A key focus for this event is the three day world class Technical Conference, where speakers from the international LIDAR community will be reporting on latest technology advances and recent projects, highlighting actual experiences and lessons learned in aerial and bathymetric LIDAR with a focus on mobile mapping. Technology advances resulting in faster and more compact data capture systems are reshaping the LIDAR mapping market. Combining these with complementary data processing and visualization systems is now opening up a whole new range of applications, and, more importantly, introducing new end-customers to the cost benefits of LIDAR mapping. All this bodes well for an internationally expanding LIDAR market. With the falling cost per mile of data capture and processing, surveys can now be conducted more often and updated more frequently.

The ILMF Technical Committee lead by Conference Chairman Alastair MacDonald from TMSI invite papers on a number of topics all of which can be found on the website http://www.lidarmap.org/conference/submit_papers.aspx . Abstracts should be no more than 250 words and can be submitted online at the aforementioned website address. The deadline is September 7, 2011. Each abstract will be peer reviewed by the committee.

Another key component is the exhibition that will feature more than 50 leading companies in this rapidly growing global market showcasing new LIDAR products and a wide range of new technologies and services. Exhibitors include the LIDAR and complementary sensor manufacturers, survey service companies, data processing, GIS and management specialists and the latest mobile mapping vehicles. The exhibition also houses an informative array of technical posters from academia and industry.

Conference Chairman Alastair MacDonald commented, “The LIDAR scanners now arriving on the market are smaller, faster and cheaper to operate, and in addition to driving new applications and user sectors, their cost-efficiency is enabling greater volumes of mapping work to be undertaken than ever before.” He went on to say, “ As the world’s leading LIDAR focused event, the ILMF offers a wealth of interest and benefits to all delegates, users and buyers at all levels: whether you are a seasoned LIDAR professional and want to update your knowledge, or a new entrant to the LIDAR community who wants to find out what LIDAR is about, ILMF is for you. With world class speakers in three Conference tracks on airborne, bathymetry and mobile mapping, and all the key technology suppliers exhibiting, the ILMF is relevant to all mapping sectors and is the main event to visit.”

The Conference Program is complemented by Technical workshops which are hosted by exhibiting companies and are aimed at providing novice operators and their managers and potential purchasers of equipment with an understanding of the basic principles and fundamental benefits and technology associated with LIDAR whilst providing the more seasoned experts with up-to-date information on current developments. Delegates can dip in and out of these sessions and follow up with exhibiting companies at their booths to become fully aware of the products and opportunities offered within the LIDAR market.

Even though the pace of the Conference will be no doubt demanding, there will still be time for the trademark socialising and networking events for which the ILMF is well known!

Further information on all aspects of ILMF 2012 can be found online at www.lidarmap.orgor by emailing info@lidarmap.org

2012 NACCS Tejas Regional Conference Call for Paper and Panel Proposals

Call for Paper and Panel Proposals

2012 NACCS Tejas Regional Conference
Texas State University, San Marcos
March 1-3, 2012

Chicanas and Chicanos are a highly diverse people. Today many of our scholars are engaged in wide-ranging research across disciplinary fields continuously adding to our collective knowledge of who we are. Our artists, workers, professionals, policymakers, grassroots and religious leaders, and others within our communities are doing important work in constructing our diverse cultural realities. Our scholarship and rich community experiences continue to reflect us as a people with many intercultural and transnational complexities. Across Tejas alone, many differences exist, yet more numerous are the commonalities binding us together. As peoples native to this land with a long history of struggle for justice and equality in society, our understanding of how we see ourselves and how others see us has grown and matured.

The 2012 NACCS Tejas Regional Conference Committee therefore invites proposals for papers, panels, exhibits, performances, and other creative means for addressing the many ways we see ourselves as well as how others see us-in the past, present, and our rapidly changing future. We invite Chican@ perspectives on the varied situations where we find ourselves located socially, culturally, educationally, historically, politically-rhetorically. We invite perspectives which best seek to illustrate the conference theme "This Is Us."

While the primary theme for the conference centers on analyzing and reflecting on Chicana and Chicano perceptions of ourselves, additional topics related to the Chican@, Latin@, or Mexican American experience are also highly welcomed.

We hereby invite you to Texas State University, San Marcos where we can all share our knowledge. Ultimately, it is we who determine who we are, como nos vemos. In myriad ways we are our community’s storytellers, teachers, organizers, writers, leaders, and students young and old. With great hope for the future, we seek your voice and participation in elucidating scholarly and rhetorical strategies for gaining a wider, deeper, and richer understanding of all raza in Tejas.

Due Date: Please e-mail 250-word proposals by December 18, 2011 to Dr. Jaime Armin Mejía at jm31. We welcome questions, comments, and suggestions regarding the conference.
